Scott # 13; 9

1851-57 Issue 10c Washington Type I Pair on Cover to France

1855 10c green Washington Type I pair and a 1c blue Franklin Type IV single on cover paying the twenty-one cent American Packet treaty rate from Vermillionville, Louisiana, to Noroy-Le-Bourg via England. The 10c Type I pair is sound with margins all around to just touching the bottom of the right stamp. The 1c single has minor faults, along with blue grid & lightened manuscript cancels on all three stamps. Cover has a red “New-York Am. Pkt. Oct 11” exchange office & a black Havre “Paq. Ama.” circular date stamps. Additionally, the cover includes Paris, Noroy-Le-Bourg receiving back stamps and a neat black oval merchant’s handstamp on the front. Minor cover wear and small sealed tear at bottom do not detract in the least from this wonderful trans-Atlantic cover, bearing an especially rare 1855 10c Type I pair!

The postage prepaid the 5c U.S. inland postage and 16c sea transit fee. The black 16 centimes due marking at the lower-right accounts for 3 centimes due to England for transit and 5 centimes for the French inland delivery fee. Since the cover weighed more than ¼ ounce but less than ½ ounce, the amount due by the addressee in France was doubled to 16 centimes. A centime is equal to about 2 American cents, so the total postage fee for this cover was 53 cents. Though the total postage was split between the sender and receiver, 53 cents in 1856 is equivalent to over $11 today—quite a lot of money for a letter that weighed less than half an ounce!
