Scott # 253

1894 1st Bureau Issue 3c Jackson on 2c Entire to Germany, then Forwarded to Belgium

1894 1st Bureau Issue 3c purple Jackson single used on 2c entire envelope sent from Burlington, Iowa, with March 28, 1895 Burlington Junction Trans Clerk RPO cancel to Kaiserslautern, Germany (in western Germany, near the French border). The cover arrived at its intended destination on April 11, 1895 and was immediately forwarded to Brussels, Belgium, where it arrived the following day. New York City machine transit cancel, Kaiserslautern receiving and Brussels receiving handstamps on reverse of cover. A very fine piece of late 19th century postal history combines the 1st Bureau Issue stamp, 2c Washington entire envelope, Iowa RPO cancel, less-common initial foreign destination, then forwarding within Continental Europe. Simply exquisite!
